WEEK 1: iNTRO to Fashion Details
Fashion Today
Fashion trends are largely affected by culture, and the culture in a society is made up by its surroundings.
What are Fashion Details?
Aside from the basic length, colour and fabric, I learnt that fashion details comprises of a much larger range of considerations, including the garment details(type of collar, type of neckline, type of sleeve, type of pocket), sewing details(type of darts, type of pleats, type of stitch), etc. In each of this factor, is also a long list of fashion vocabulary that we should master.

Dior Pre-fall 2017 Dress
This dotted mesh dress consists of a gathered neckline followed by a low squared neckline on the mesh. It is a sleeveless one piece with a wide armhole and lace frills at the armhole. Rings of floral fabric wrap around the top followed by a thigh high side slit at the bottom. To complete the sweet ensemble, is a choker and embroidered ballet flats, with a strap at the back.
This look is perfect for an afternoon tea party.
Why are Fashion Details Important?
Lastly, I also learnt the importance of details when it comes to designing an outfit, because details are what makes a garment stands out and it is also why consumers are willing to spend so much more on certain garments than others.In addition, having a good grasp of fashion vocabulary is crucial as well; not just to broaden our knowledge, but also when communicating our ideas to various people in the industry.

Not just in more recognized European architecture, the shift in culture is evident everywhere.Just as we see the shift in past to modern architecture, fashion nowadays is less ornate and more simple, i.e. minimalistic.
Simultaneously the prints and fabric is also becoming more and more vibrant and playful. One perfect example is designer Jeremy Scott: whose designs are known to be simplistic, yet brimming with bold prints and bright colours.
Besides the experimentation with bold colours and different fabric, fashion has also tilted more to minimal maximalism in recent years.

I also learnt that there can be many variations of the same type of sleeve like handkerchief sleeve for example. The same type of sleeve can also vary in design and length according to trend and times.

Embellishments

Cardigan fully embedded with flat sequins & jeans embellished with beaded and rhinestone motifs
When it comes to details for embellishments, people always first notice the buttons/sequins/beads, but I learn that, as a designer, I have to look even closer at the details of the embellishment.
For example, a button: is it a 2-hole/4-hole button? is it an X-stitching/parallel stitching on the button? what is the shape of the buttonhole?
Grain Lines
In addition. fashion details also entails the type of grain lines - straight grain (cut horizontally), cross grain (cut vertically) and the bias grain, which is cut on a 45 degree angle; the bias grain is used widely in many garments to produce a flare.

Roksanda S/S17 Dress
One of the most interesting pieces I found this season is a floor-length, sheer mesh, flared, black spotted dress with a round collar, curved-in armhole and feathers to boost.
Playful yet sophisticated, this is the perfect dress to get all eyes on you.

Gucci S/S17 Dress
Another one of my favourites is this dress, that is open at the front(Hi-Lo) and adorned with large ruffles at slightly-off center front, complete with poet sleeves with frilled cuffs and a funnel neckline. This look perfectly exudes a breath of spring.

Off-White S/S17 2-piece
This boyish, cool look consists of a mid-thigh long coat with notched lapels and baggy joggers that flare at the bottom. This look offers a more relaxed alternative to the womens' pant suit.
Apart from the beltbag, which I did not appreciate, I find the overall look classy yet laid-back at the same time. However, as for the top, I feel a crop tee or a midriff blouse might be better suited.
