Week 13&14: Presentation

Image
Our Final Collection Matroyshka Dolls Inspired My designs for A/W Streetwear Each day brings forth a new winter, one that haunts and lingers. Not for this collection. Designed with practicality, this is for the new women, who are athletic and always on the move. Classic denim and flannel turtlenecks are paired slickly in an ensemble that both exudes confidence and protects from the long harsh winter. The basic jeans is reinvented in a quirky manner with fur patches and strips of rich floral embroidery, always ready to welcome the vibrant new season.  Design #1 Design #2 (Flats for jeans are the same as in Design #1) Design #3 Design #4 Design #5 Reflections Although there were some regretful parts during the presentation, it was a great learning experience nonetheless. Most of my groupmates were very enthusiastic throughout the entire process and it was a fun journey. After looking at the other's group presentation a...

Week 12: Final Preparation & Formative Feedback

Image
Last Preparation for Presentation  Embroidery Motifs on Designs We finalized these as the embroidery we are going to use on our designs. Just like our inspiration, the Matroyshka dolls, rich colours are used. Primary, Secondary colours and colours used on embroidery As observed from the Pantone website, these are the colour we have finalized for our vibrant and youthful collection. Linen Denim Flannel Lastly, we have also finalized our main fabric to be linen, denim and flannel. This is because linen is the most suited fabric for the dense embroidery we will be doing, whereas denim and flannel are great materials to help stay warm ,especially since we are designing an Autumn/Winter collection. Design Sketches/Drafts Previously, I have drawn these for our collection. However, after discussing with the group, I had decided to draw new designs, because we needed more layers in our collection and we have also decided to u...

Week 11: Fashion Curation

Image
Research Websites: cuttingclass.com, vogue.com, showstudio.com, Magazines As we were searching for magazines to help us in our curation, we also found some inspiration and ideas for our collection. Embroidery Motifs Ideas Actual Curating (individual) Intricate floral embroidery, coupled with fur trimmings, fit for the long harsh winters, this is made only for the urban and contemporary snow queens. Not forgetting the bold and contrasting colour palette, the designs were made to stand out;   put them all together, this snow queen will reign the streets forever. Needless to say, the collection pays homage to the ever-so enticing Russian traditional Matroyshka dolls, with its colourful and intricate handicraft. In fact, the ethnic and vibrant designs on the Matroyshka dolls were also key in inspiring this collection. Designed with practicality and infused with playfulness, while keeping it classy, the collection can be worn by many, many women and for many, many occasio...

Week 10: Technical Flats Review

Image
Technical Flats Practice Body-hugging jacket and baggy pants Technical Flats Oversized Blouse and Hi-Lo Dress Technical Flats Sweater Hi-Lo Reverse Top and Mermaid Skirt Technical Flats Weekly Observations Asymmetrical One-shoulder red dress (Extracted from Lookbook: 'Tim Berg-Seek Bromance (Jerome Price mix) maffashion' by Juliett K.) I REALLY LOVE this one shoulder with ruffles look and the oriental covered knot button detail that goes down center front. This would have looked really amazing if it was extended to become a long dress as well. Oriental Ruffle Dress with Train Technical Flats This dress was inspired by the previous dress. I kept the sleeve detail and the slanted hem. As for the Chinese knot button, I added it at the side of the dress and this is where the opening will be. The opening will be slanted towards the hem of the dress as well, which would be cut on bias. Burberry Coat with Ruffled Collar (Ta...

Week 9: Project Presentation

Image
Collection: Matroyshka Dolls AKA Russian Nesting Dolls     Collection Overview Target Demographic: Young Adults Range: Dresses, Faux Fur Designs/Prints: Mandala and Floral Motifs, as inspired by drawings on Matroyshka dolls Colour Scheme: (Primary and Secondary Colours ) My Design for our Collection Illustration Dress Flats Comments: 1) Hem area is too small and it would be too tight 2) Zipper seam needs to go all the way down 3) How do you achieve such a shape of the dress after the waist? 4) No armhole. Dress Flats after Correction Weekly Observations Off Shoulder Suit Jacket and 'Stirrup' Pants (Extracted from Lookbook: 'Starley-Call On Me(Ryan Riback Remix)/maffashion' by Juliett K.) The way the white suit was so oversized and slit at the shoulder, and how the pants extended to hold the arch of the feet, was both very interesting and innovative to me. It redefines career wear with a tint of quir...

Week 8: Intro to Designing our own collection (in groups)

Image
Basic Guideline in Designing a collection Step 1: Brainstorming a Theme One way we can do so is to use WGSN to look up trends/predictions , when thinking of a theme/idea. It is also important to get accustom to looking at trends, to be able to predict/start a trend in the future! :) WGSN team looking at latest runway trend (Source:http://fashionandmash.com/2014/09/03/wgsns-social-media-news-room-to-provide-more-access-to-fashion-week-season-than-ever-before/) Another way we can do so is also to start from a general concept like Nature , then analyse the options , for example the ocean/sea , then go even further to a specific element/part like corals/jellyfish . From here on, I feel we could even explore into a colour scheme/silhouette . I learnt that it is also important to explore out of the boundaries of a given concept. Step 2: Identify Target Market Knowing what kind of demographic we are targeting is crucial as each person wears different kinds of clothing. T...

Week 7 Review & Reflection

Image
Review and Reflections These 7 weeks flew by in the blink of an eye.. Through primary research (store visits), I have learnt and understood first hand how details on garments are constructed and recognized the different kinds of unique details in high-end labels. By doing secondary research (websites, apps and books), I gained more exposure to the different kinds of details on garments all over the world and learnt about the numerous fashion vocabulary. Last but not least, observational drawings and drawing flats are the most vital I feel, as they really allow me to understand where certain seams/stitch/darts are suppose to be placed and how I can apply these details to my own designs. Furthermore, it made me realise how important it is to illustrate clearly to ease in communicating my ideas on a garment. So really, practice is important. Group Collection: Design of a collection using details my group found from Ion Orchard To complete our final blog, my group ...
