Week 5: Exploring details @ ION Orchard

Mission

This week, as a group, we were tasked with a mission to search for unique finishing details from high end brand labels.
It was an enriching (and horrific) experience, but all the more it made me realise why these branded stores with their glamorous façade are indeed different from the rest of the fast fashion labels, and that it takes a certain attitude and confidence to walk into those shimmering havens.

Findings

The stores we visited were Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Valentino, Diane von Furstenberg, Miu Miu, Burberry and DKNY, and below were a few of our findings with their details in close up.

1. First we decided to have a look at this Burberry trench because the coloured trimmings and full shank buttons was something we rarely saw on trench coats.

 Burberry Trench Coat (Front)
- a nude gold cotton gabardine
- double breasted
- above knee length

DETAILS
- hook and eye fasteners on the collars
- black and red cord trimming on the Napolean lapels
- full shank gold button on the epaulette

* Gabardine was invented by the founder of Burberry. It is a type of a novel wool which is ripped resistant, virtually crease-proof & water repellant, yet remain porous and offers good ventilation for cool and comfortable wear

 Burberry Trench Coat (Back)

DETAILS
- a quilted belt with gold D-rings
- back vent tab

2. Then we came across this cute Gucci dress with uniform box pleats.

Gucci Sleeveless Gabardine Jersey
- above knee length
(-100% nylon)
- $1700

DETAILS
- green and red box pleats on the collar and arm openings
- molded plastic zip teeth with a ring zip slider
- bust darts

* Garbardine is a tough. tightly woven fabric

3. At Gucci, we also found this adorable skirt and was impressed by the knitted blend on the skirt.

Gucci knitted high waisted lurex skirt
- A line
- above knee length
- knitted with a blend of black and gold lurex
- $890

DETAILS
- gold lurex trimming on the hemlines
- the skirt is lined with silk georgette

*Lurex is a type of yarn which incorporates a glittering metallic thread
*Georgette has the light crepe texture, which feels slightly rough, but makes the fabric a bit bouncy ,giving it a flowing look. The threads used in the fabric are highly twisted, giving it a  rubbery texture when rubbed (making the fabric almost appear to move on its own)

4. Lastly a Dior outfit caught our attention with its interesting front opening. It was only when we took a closer look, that we noticed the amount of detailing that actually went into the piece, which left us even more impressed.

I really like the lacing at the off-shoulder neckline and the layers of flare at the bottom, which adds height to whoever is wearing it.

Weekly Observations

As I watching a K-pop music video by female artist, Tae-yeon, I noticed a dramatic dress that I LOVED.

(S-T-W) I really love looking at dresses like this as it immediately reminds me of masquerade balls and circus acts. I love the height of the ruffles because it just makes it that much more dramatic. I think the mini dress is just perfect with the huge ruffles because it keeps the whole outfit simple and elegant without drawing too much attention away from the highlight, and it also keeps the overall look balanced. I wonder when I will be able to wear a dress like this...
